A. —Dans les pays anglo-saxons, personne mise hors la loi. Mettre à mort un outlaw. Il reste les outlaw, retirés au fond des forêts, qui ont abandonné Londres au clergé et aux chevaliers étrangers (MORAND, Londres, 1933, p.7). C'est ici, dit-on, que vécut le Robin Hood du Nouveau Mexique, Billy the Kid, le plus célèbre des outlaws (S. DE BEAUVOIR, L'Amérique au jour le jour, 1954 [1947], p.194 ds REY-GAGNON Anglic. 1980).
B. —P.ext., vieilli. Personne qui vit en marge de la société et de ses lois. Synon. hors-la-loi. Le héros romain, le fondateur de la cité, doit être d'abord un homme sans patrie et sans loi, un outlaw, un banni, un bandit, mots synonymes chez les peuples barbares (MICHELET, Hist. romaine, t.1, 1831, p.57). Dans cet assassin capable de tuer presque en pleine rue de Paris, le public comptait admirer un premier rôle de Cour d'assises, un terrible bandit, vivant en outlaw, en libre sauvage, au milieu de la civilisation (COPPÉE, Coupable, 1897, p.302).
